How to choose a web agency to build your website?
Choosing a provider matters more than choosing a technology. A good provider asks about your business before talking about design. Here are the criteria that make the difference.
Look at verifiable work
A portfolio should let you check the client’s name, the live website and the provider’s exact role. A gallery of mock-ups with no identifiable client proves very little. Our case studies state the client, the service and the year for each project.
Questions to ask
- Who will actually do the work, and who will be my contact?
- Who will own the website, the domain name and the source code?
- How will the website be maintained, and at what cost?
- How will the old addresses be redirected if I already have a website?
- How will we measure whether the website meets its goals?
Warning signs
- a “guaranteed” first place on Google: nobody can honestly promise that;
- a quote with no detail of pages, features and exclusions;
- a domain name registered in the provider’s name;
- a long-term rental contract that is hard to terminate;
- no questions about your customers and your business.
What a good quote must contain
The precise scope, deliverables, stages and approvals, schedule, payment terms, intellectual property and what happens after launch. Our general terms and conditions, for example, set out the warranty and the transfer of rights.
Local or remote?
Proximity makes the first conversations easier, but the quality of follow-up matters more than distance. A remote provider can work perfectly well with you by video call. If you are in Normandy, we also meet clients in Le Havre.
